June 17: Day One

Yesterday I arrived in my first foreign country. It’s so exciting to be utterly surrounded by the Spanish language! There are also quite a few small differences I’ve noticed here, like how the trees grow tall and skinny, light switches are sometimes on the outside of a room, the elevator has an extra door, and that olive oil seems to be in every single dish we eat. I guess it’s a good thing I love olive oil! I am staying with Bena, her husband Crístobal, and her mother, all three of whom speak no English. They’re very hospitable, and Bena is already helping me to improve my Spanish on day one. The apartment is so wonderfully decorated, and the view from the terrace (and my room) is gorgeous!
